Windows Live Messenger

Microsoft begins to reveal what will the next version of Windows Live Messenger look like , the instant messaging service which attracts over 320 million users worldwide. Windows Live Messenger is more than 10 billion messages exchanged every day worldwide.

For Microsoft, the new version of Windows Live Messenger will be hinged on two words: proximity and privacy.

This new version has been designed to allow everyone to make Messenger the dashboard of his social life on the Internet, and strengthen links with relatives, ever more mixed emotions live in confidence.

By contrast to the social networking site Facebook,on the new version of Windows Live Messenger no personal information is visible by default. You keep control over the information that you post. With a new interface simpler and more intuitive, so you can set the privacy level you want, depending on the contact and type of information shared.

so what’s new in Windows Live Messenger 10:
• The development of HD for a better live chat
• A window on social networks, to “socialize” without losing control over your privacy
• The opening on the Web, share content and points of view
• The conversation video on 16:9 HD, the format automatically adjusts depending on the bandwidth of the computer or camera used, with the possibility of projection corresponding to the TV screen useful for live a moment with his family in movie format
• The ability to share content such as photos, while conducting a HD video conversation great for commenting on the photos and to party with friends
• the opportunity to organize your conversations tab to not mix discussions
• A status (available, busy, etc..) Contacts by category
• The ability to leave video messages even offline

Google Earth 3D

In addition to the views in the form of maps and satellite images, users of Google Maps have now a new option: display images 3D from Earth View.
To enjoy these spectacular images, it is not necessary to install Google Earth. A simple plug-in is now enough to visit the planet in 3D, without leaving your browser. Its installation is also automatically offered when we connect to the mapping service.

Google justified this development by the improving of Web browsers which are now much faster. The plug-in is compatible with Windows operating systems (2000, XP, Vista and 7) and Mac OS X (version 10.4 and later).
It works with common browsers: Google Chrome, of course, but Internet Explorer (version 7 and later), Firefox (version 2.0 and later) and Flock (version 1 and following), and finally Safari (version 3.1 and later).

This new option offers a real advantage for users who can explore places, known or unknown, under a new aspect. The changeover can be done very easily from an arrow navigation placed at the top left of the window. it can be tilted to control the map to discover the effects of terrain.

Navigation in 3D images is extremely fluid, whether when you move, change camera angles or make enlargements.

the terrain modeling of buildings and the spectacular function of overflying the planet when you move from one point to another. In short, this online version of Earth has the same feelings as the software, or almost.
The plug-in in fact isn’t integrating all functions of Google Earth. The historical tours, which help you see the evolution of a neighborhood over time, GPS routes, the flight simulation tool or images of the Moon and Mars are not available in the interface mapping. In these cases, using the software is essential.

Microsoft next target !

Shaken by Blackberry, Google and more particular by Apple on the segment of smartphones, Microsoft has decided to regain the lost ground by unveiling not only “Windows Phone”, a new collection of smartphones, but also by opening Windows Mobile Marketplace , its new Download platform to compete with Apple’s AppStore.

Although if rumors have mentioned a Microsoft phone ,Windows Phones are those provided by its traditional partners: Acer (NewTouch and beTouchE200), Samsung (Omnia Pro B7610, Pro B7330 Omnia, Omnia Lite, Omnia II), HTC (Touch II Touch Diamond II and Touch HD II), GM750 LG, Toshiba or TG01 Sony Ericsson (Xperia X2). ” which means that Microsoft is proposing a total of 30 smart phones in over than 20 countries before the end of 2009 , and offers a wide variety of phone forms (touchscreen or not, keyboards, ..) to its users.

In terms of software, Windows Phones are obviously based on the operating system Windows Mobile 6.5, which has been enhanced with the well known Microsoft business applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint in Officemobile, Outlook Mobile compatible with Exchange Server and Hotmail) and also general public software as Windows Live (social network) or MyPhone (sync on the web).

Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft also affirmed that people now want to communicate quickly with their families but also have immediate access to information. Windows phones offer to their users a remarkable experience whether at work or at home

in addition to the applications, the Windows Phones stand out from their predecessors by simplifying application downloads from the new Windows Mobile Marketplace. “Microsoft is currently working with 731 developers worldwide who will offer more than 200 applications on Windows startup Mobile Marketplace.” But compared to the 75 000 applications of apple store, Microsoft has a lot of work to do .

After the uncertain success of Google Phones, Microsoft certainly intends to impose its smart phones and download platform as the first alternative to Apple’s iPhone. An ambition also shared by Nokia, RIM / Blackberry and Palm the former leader in mobile technology that was dethroned by Microsoft in the early 2000s. The question is whether history will repeat itself again.

Google GO

Google has released Go, a new programming language. Go combines the speed of development when programming with a dynamic language like Python with the effectiveness and safety of compiled languages like C or C + +. Even big binary files are compiled in few seconds, the compiled code runs at a speed close to that of the C language.

Google also introduced the site GoLang.org to promote its new tool for developers. The site also offers all the documentation about the language as well as tutorials and samples of codes.

The FAQ is also detailing what led to the conception of Go:

No major system language has emerged over the last ten years while during that time the computing landscape has changed tremendously.
Here are some trends:

* Computers are much faster than before, but software development is not that much faster .

* The dependency management plays a large part of the software development today, but the “header files ” of the languages in the C tradition are antithetical to clean a dependency analysis and a faster compilation.

* There is a growing rebellion against the heavy-type systems like Java and C + +, pushing people towards dynamic languages such as Python and JavaScript.

* Some basic concepts such as (garbage collector) and parallel computing are not well supported by the popular language system.

* The emergence of multi-machine processor created much anxiety and confusion.

* It is possible to compile impressive programs in GO in a few seconds with a simple computer

* Go provides a model for building software that makes the dependency analysis a very easy thing and avoids loading a large part of the include files of type C and libraries.

* Types in GO have no hierarchy, so you do not need to waste time defining the relationships between types. Although if Go has static types , the language is trying to make Types lighter than in conventional object-oriented languages.

* Go completely manages the garbage collector and provides a fundamental support for concurrent execution and communication.

* Due to its design, Go proposes an approach of software systems developing on multi-processor machines.

An additional page is dedicated to C + + developers to list the conceptual differences between the two languages. It is about class (there are none in GO), pointers and hash tables.

The GO language, is still not internally used by Google. However, if this newcomer in the vast family of programming languages interested you , you can always apply at Google. Once again, the company relies on the millions of anonymous hands around the world to complete this open-source language by libraries that will increase its popularity.

Note that the Mountain View firm already employs Guido Van Rossum, the inventor of Python, and other big names in software development such as Ken Thompson who created the B language (the ancestor of C, C + +, … ) and Rob Pike who designed UTF-8,whose next ?? me maybe :p

Energy Star 5

Adopted by the European Commission, the fifth version of the Energy Star label has just become effective. Jointly developed in Europe and the United States (it is also used by the U.S Environment Agency.), Energy Star is not a mandatory standard but an eco-label created to seduce computer buyers who care about the environment or look forward to reduce their electricity bill.

The 5 is intended to desktops , laptops and work stations .
Compared to version 4, version 5 is much more stringent. The new label takes into consideration the components of the machine to define the thresholds of consumption that shouldn’t be exceeded . The power of the PC must also show a yield of 85% against 80% in the previous version.

Desktops are classified into four categories: A, B, C or D, and only three categories, A, B and C, for laptops. Each category corresponds to a minimum configuration; the most powerful desktop is classified in Class D. In each category, a threshold not to be exceeded was set. To qualify, a desktop class B should not exceed a theoretical annual average of 175 kWh, against 234 kWh for a desktop PC category D.

Each threshold is calculated on the basis of a specific use . For a desktop, it is assumed that the machine is completely extinguished 55% of the time and once lit, it is 5% of time on standby mode and 40% of the time running normally. For laptops, the scenario is slightly different. The machine is expected to remain off 60% of the time, run 30% of the time and remain on standby 10% of the time. The annual consumption not to exceed is much lower, between 40 and 88 kWh (class A to C).

according to the creators of the label, the conforming devices consume 30 to 60% less energy compared to machines Energy Star 4.

Today, the number of approved references is still limited, but should rapidly increase. But beware when you buy a certified PC, it is important to verify that it is conform to the latest version of the label!
